Many farmers believe that the correct way to plant is to sow the seeds deep enough so that each seed is in a moist environment. While humidity is important, there are also disadvantages to sowing too deep or too shallow. With too shallow sowing, the seeds are potentially not in moist soil and will not germinate evenly. However, what happens when moisture is more, even in shallows?

In this scenario, sowing deeper than necessary will cost you the speed and consistency of germination, due to a shortage of the heat that is found in deeper soil, which gives a start to germination.

Even when the same depth setting is set, the actual seeding depth can vary up to ½ inch, due to production deviations and/or wear. You can check this variation on your planter by doing a depth check on each boot. When trying to precisely sow crops such as cotton below the soil surface, it is very important to set the correct depth.
