Conservation Farming: The Road to Sustainability — Part 1

Conservation agriculture is a key topic in modern agriculture, focused on sustainability and environmental protection. During the Innovation Forum organized by NIK Academy, 2023, with the participation of experts such as Tibor Horvat from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), successful practices and strategies for switching from conventional to conservation methods were presented.

The main aspects of conservation agriculture

Conservation agriculture includes a number of techniques that aim to protect the soil and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Key elements include:

Strip-till processing

Effective transition from conventional to conservation treatment. This method reduces soil disturbance by 30%, resulting in the same decrease in carbon dioxide emissions as carbon remains in the soil.

Tibor Horvat stressed:

“With strip-till tillage, soil disturbance is only 30%, which also means 30% less carbon dioxide emissions”

Cover crops

Their use reduces carbon emissions while increasing soil fertility and its ability to retain moisture. This is especially important in drought, which is a common problem.

Flawless technology

This practice involves direct sowing without plowing, using special planters. It also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and improves soil health.

Challenges and successes

One of the big problems that accompany the shift to conservation agriculture is weeds, which require specific approaches in plant protection. However, the benefits of methods such as strip-till and peerless technology are proven over time. In the words of Horvath: “The capacity of the soil to retain water is better, and in the long term the content of organic matter in the soil increases”

In this first article, we looked at the basic elements of conservation agriculture and its importance to sustainability. In the following articles, we will continue with a more in-depth analysis of innovative practices and technologies in agriculture.
