From Diesel to Solar: How a Bulgarian Farm Saved Over €70,000 in One Season?

In modern agriculture, efficiency is no longer a choice, but a matter of survival. Every farm seeks to optimize its costs, and one of the biggest drains on the budget has traditionally been irrigation. Today, we present a story from a farm in Northeast Bulgaria that replaced its diesel generator with a smart solar system.

The Challenge: Reliance on Diesel and High Operating Costs

For years, the farm relied on a 175 HP (130 kW) diesel generator to power its 90-kilowatt pump during the period from June 1st to August 30th. The reality on the ground looked like this:

• Massive Fuel Consumption: For one season (92 days) with round-the-clock operation, approximately 53,168 liters of diesel.
• Significant Financial Burden: Fuel alone costs over €70,000 per season.
• Maintenance Costs: Service, oil, and filters add another 4,000 € - €6,000  to the annual bill.
• Risk of failure: A breakdown at the peak of the heat can compromise the entire harvest

The technological solution: A field power supply system – portable solar panels and batteries from NIK - no bureaucracy or building permits required!

The solution comes in the form of a hybrid system, combining photovoltaic power and a battery (Battery Energy Storing System). The installation includes:

• Power: 600 kWp, distributed across three mobile PV containers.
• Energy Buffer: 1,566 kWh battery capacity (6 modules of 261 kWh each).
• Independence: The system covers the pump's needs even in cloudy weather and at night, eliminating the need for diesel.

Unlike permanent photovoltaic parks on agricultural land, mobile solar panels do not require a building permit.

The Results: Numbers that Transform Business

After implementing the system, irrigation costs are drastically transformed, with the Bulgarian farmer expecting a full return on investment within a maximum of 4 years.  

From Consumer to Producer

The sun works 12 months a year, while intensive irrigation is only 3 months. With an average yield for the region of 1200 kWh/kWp, the system generates approximately 720 MWh annually.

Once the irrigation consumption of 199 MWhis covered, approximately 521 MWh remain for sale to the grid, representing a potential additional income.

• Reliability: Eliminate unexpected costs for emergency repairs during peak season, which can amount to up to €20,000.

• Energy Independence: The battery system (BESS) of 1 566 kWh ensures operation even during cloudy periods and at night.
